Environmental Educational center of Makrinitsa

Makrinitsa is located on Mount Pelion in Magnesia. It is 17 km away from the hotels in  Volos. The community of Makrinitsa is a traditional village at an altitude from 350 to 850 meters with many buildings of traditional architecture, mansions, churches, paved alleys in a green natural environment.
 In Makrinitsa, several programs are organized
1st “The grandma from Pelion recalls……. Herbs for all the illnesses”
The aims of this program is for all the students to acquire the basic knowledge for the aromatic and medicated soap, to observe them at their natural environment and learn to tell them apart according to their characteristics, to learn their multiple uses, the importance and their beneficial qualities, to become sensitive to their protection, to communicate with the residents of the village and to find clues for their economic and social life.

2nd: “Touristic tours in nature and in the tradition of the village”
The 2nd program aims at truly introducing the students to the characteristics of the traditional settlement, in combination with the natural environment, to acquiring the basic knowledge to distinguish the multiple values of these settlements and of the environment, to understanding the need to respect and protect this heritage, to learning about the economic activities of the village and the relation to the tourism, to distinguishing, evaluating and preferring the local products, to realizing that  tourism can combine the entertainment along with the acquisition of knowledge for the nature and the tradition, to living individually and in groups the importance of alternative tourism.
3rd: “A day at the museum……”
The educational program utilizes the potentials that Makrinitsa has to offer for a visit at the Folklore Art and History museum of Pelion or to Anakasia with Theofilos museum.
The purpose of the program is to improve the perception of the museum education, so as for the students to gain knowledge, to be creative and have fun as they will learn about the evolution of human beings and nature.
4rth : “The fountains in Makrinitsa”
The purpose of this program is to introduce the students to everything that has to do with water on our planet (distribution of waters, kinds of waters, the cycle of the water in nature, water shortage, the pollution and so on), to realize the importance of water for the living creatures, to learn about human’s constructions for the assurance of water in the cities and the villages (irrigation systems – water supply)
As for Pelion and the fountains in Makrinitsa the aim is to understand that the fountains are an important element of the architectural tradition of the village as well as the aesthetics of the place, to learn about the infrastructure –form and the organization of the water supply- irrigation system of the village that at the historical evolution of the settlement consisted a way of management – distribution of this valuable  product , the water and therefore to realize the importance of the presence and the function of the fountains in people’s lives.
